* * *

Chad held the ram’s horn up to the morning sunlight pouring through his bedchamber window. It overlooked the town of Mountain Springs. He turned it this way and that but could see nothing that hinted at the supernatural powers it possessed. It simply looked like an ancient, weathered old ram’s horn — a dry and brittle one that, quite frankly, was close to disintegrating from age.

He’d already been downstairs to break his fast. Plus, he’d paid his first visit to the sawmill, where he and Ridge had come to a shaky truce. Ridge was as cocky and hardheaded a logger as they came, but he had no wish to lose his job. Their agreement was simple. Ridge could keep his position as general manager over the crew so long as he followed Chad’s orders swiftly and accurately. There was a new Patterson in town. Ridge would do best to remember it.

Chad would be watching him very closely the next few days and weeks. Any sign of disloyalty or any stirring of mutinous behavior among the crew members that pointed to his machinations, and Chad wouldn’t think twice about tossing him off the mountain for good.

A shiver of movement on the trail leading up to their property made him squint in surprise. It was Old Jenson in his wagon with an unscheduled delivery. That was odd. He blinked. What was even odder were the two extra passengers. One of them was Abigail Price. What in tarnation was she doing back on his mountain?

The ram’s horn slid from his hands and clattered to the plank floor. He glanced down and was shocked to discover the instrument was still in one piece. How? He bent to pick it up and shook it against his ear. No broken pieces rattled inside it. Unbelievable!

His next thought was that Abigail might have ridden back up the mountain for the precise purpose of hunting down her magical ram’s horn. He had no idea what that tiny slip of a woman was up to today, but he certainly didn’t intend to let her use her horn to blast them back into kingdoms past. So long as he lived and breathed, he never again wanted to relive the fear he’d experienced when she’d ridden away with Nabal’s wife. He never again wanted to feel so helpless to protect her, garbed with nothing but two tiny pistols against an entire legion of soldiers.

He also wasn’t the least bit happy about the fact that she’d been right about the whole time travel element of their escapade. He was still struggling to absorb the staggering fact that he’d spent an afternoon in a Biblical city conversing with an ancient king. It was the stuff of fairytales. Miraculous mumbo jumbo. Utter insanity!

Chad bent his head to glance into the mirror over his wash basin, just to ensure he didn’t have a crazy red glow to his eyes or some other proof that he belonged in a straightjacket. Clear brown eyes stared back at him, containing nothing more than puzzlement and irritation.
